A New Year, A New You?

This year I am hoping to make Sunday a regular blogging slot for me, and to add something new every week, hopefully interesting, sometimes useful, often topical. So what to start with? Well it seems there is only one topic on many people’s minds this week.

At this time of year, there is always a big push in the media, and a determination in the population in general, and I am no different. We all go about trying to get our diets/exercise/health on track, and to make life changes to bring this about, it is on TV, in the newspapers, all over social media. Everyone wants to make a change for the better, but is it only our habits that need changing? Is it just that we need to improve our diets, increase our exercise etc, or is something more fundamental?

What I believe we need to change is our whole attitude to ourselves, to our health, our weight and our lifestyles. Certain illnesses and conditions, dictate certain aspects of our lives. For instance, my medical condition dictates that I cannot drive, other people’s dictate what they can and cannot eat etc, but do we allow them too much freedom in dictating WHO we are? Many of us need to accept that some things are a part of the way we have to live, but we also need to accept that we still have to live, and we need to do that to the best of our ability!

It is in everyone’s best interest to try to adopt a healthy lifestyle, eat less rubbish, do more exercise and take care of ourselves, but we don’t have to expect ourselves to be perfect, and then beat ourselves up when we’re not! Small sustained changes is what are needed, not drastic programmes that last two weeks and then crash and burn. So I am aiming for a few small changes to hopefully make a difference. I will NOT let my life be dictated by my illness, my weight or any other such factors. I am the captain of this ship, and I’m taking the wheel!  Heading in the right direction! Setting goals not resolutions!
